Hospital Sector update
Posted: November 20, 2023. 10:55AM EDT
Members who had a work-related injury or illness after April 1, 2020, and received loss of earnings (LOE) benefits should call the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) at 1-800-387-0750 to advise that their pre-injury earnings have increased, by how much and when the increase was effective, which should increase the rate of their LOE benefits.
To be cautious, members should also advise the WSIB in writing via fax at 1-888-313-7373, two-way message or www.wsib.ca/upload. Members should keep copies of the fax or upload confirmation. If their rate is not increased within a month, the member should ask to speak to a manager to escalate the issue and follow up regularly thereafter.

Call for interested members! Work with ONA during a federal election campaign
The purpose of this campaign is to empower our members to make informed choices in the upcoming federal election. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that the federal government has a critical role in provincial health-care spending. This election is an opportunity to pressure all parties to invest in sustainable, more resilient health care. We also aim to increase voter turnout as well as increase knowledge of the party platforms within our membership.
The ONA federal election campaign will last approximately four weeks, from August 30, 2021 – September 24, 2021 (election day).* There will be approximately ten members chosen to work alongside the campaign staff leads: Sebastian Ronderos-Morgan, Ken Marciniec, Stacey Papernick and Etana Cain from Communications and Government Relations at ONA. Training will be provided virtually over the week of August 30, 2021 – September 3, 2021 (depending on schedules and availability). The three weeks of campaign book-off will begin September 6, 2021 and end September 24, 2021. The regional activists will work together to create a plan of engagement for their region and connect back to the campaign leads for support.
*Note: the planning for this campaign depends on when and if the current federal government decides to call an election. Rumour has it that the election call could come in mid-August. Campaign timelines may change.
More information
- This is a temporary secondment role.
- Time commitment is 4 weeks of booked off time (negotiated by your LRO with your employer).
- Time will be split between 2-3 days of training in August and/or September (depending on availability and need) and;
3 weeks (Monday – Friday) some evenings required for phone banking and other events, between September 6 – 24, 2021.*
Training
We will provide training on:
- Texting program, phone banking, how to engage members in political conversations, how to connect federal issues to provincial ones, how to talk about the issues in your workplace, how to move people from not interested in politics to curious and engaged! How to affect change in your workplace, community and the broader public as a nurse and health-care professional.
- Government relations, internal membership mobilizing, communications
Role of the seconded members
- Raise awareness within their Bargaining Unit about the federal election.
- Get their bargaining unit informed and voting for public health care.
- Get their local informed and voting for public health care.
- Connect local issues to nearby target ridings to impact the outcome of the election in that riding.
- Connect local issues to local candidates to ensure that long-term and sustainable relationships are formed with labour leaders, politicians, and other community activists.
- Work with other ONA leaders to come up with events, actions and engagement that is attuned to local needs and interests.

Virtual Rally to Repeal Bill 124
Friday, May 28 from 12-1:15 p.m.
Ontario nurses and health-care professionals are demanding that the Ford PC government repeal Bill 124, the wage-suppression legislation that targets women-dominated professions and takes away the right to freely negotiate fair wages. It also exempts male-dominated professions, such as police and firefighters, further showing the Ford government’s disrespect for women.
For more than a year, nurses and health-care professionals have been on the front lines showing up every day to care for patients and their families during this pandemic. They are burning out. Despite this, Premier Ford continues to devalue nursing and care work. Nurses and health-care professionals deserve respect. This bill is just a tactic to suppress a pay increase that does not keep up with inflation. Declining wages are driving nurses and health-care professionals away from their professions.
The Ford government seems to be picking and choosing who is worthy of receiving recognition. Nurses and health-care professionals deserve a fair wage increase too! This year’s hospital collective bargaining arbitration decision will be released by the arbitrator at the end of May or in June. With Premier Ford’s Bill 124 still law, it is likely that we will not achieve more than a one per cent wage increase. It is past time for this government to repeal Bill 124.
Join the movement of nurses, health-care professionals and public supporters that are demanding respect, fair wages and the right to freely negotiate.
Stand up, participate and be counted at ONA’s Virtual Rally to Repeal Bill 124 Now!
Join us Friday, May 28 from 12 noon to 1:15 p.m. Register Here!
Let’s turn up the heat and raise your voice alongside hundreds of nurses and health-care professionals. We’ll hear directly from ONA leaders, nurses, health-care professionals, union leaders, politicians and others.
We will be taking actions together during the rally to pressure the Ford government to repeal Bill 124.
Watch the livestream at https://www.facebook.com/OntarioNurses Media will be invited to attend. Let’s seize this important moment before the release of the arbitration award to exercise our power as 68,000 strong and show Premier Ford that we have had enough.

Join the Phone Zap on May 20 to #StopBill124!
Thursday, May 20 from 3:30-5:00 p.m.
Ontario nurses and health-care professionals demand the Ford PC government repeal Bill 124, their wage-suppression legislation that targets women-dominated professions and takes away our right to freely negotiate fair wages. Exempting male-dominated professions, such as police and firefighters, shows this government disrespects women. For more than a year, you have been on the front lines of this pandemic and Premier Ford continues to devalue nursing and care work. This Bill is just the latest tactic used to suppress a simple increase for nurses and health-care professionals that would help you stop losing ground financially. Declining wages are driving many of you away from your professions. You should not have to continue to fight for the respect you deserve. The Ford government is picking and choosing who is worthy receiving recognition. They have provided COVID-19 wage increases to physicians, but have left most others, including nurses and health-care professionals, behind. This year’s hospital bargaining decision will be released by the Arbitrator at the end of May or in June. With Premier Ford’s Bill 124 still law, it is highly unlikely that we will achieve more than a one-per-cent wage increase. It is past time for this government to repeal Bill 124.
Join the movement of nurses and health-care professionals that are demanding respect, fair wages and the right to freely negotiate. Stand up and be counted as we seize this important moment before the release of the arbitration award to exercise our power as 68,000 strong and show Premier Ford that we have had enough.
Join the Bill 124 Phone and Email Zap! Take action with nurses, health-care professionals and our supporters.
We will call and email the Ford Cabinet and opposition party leaders to demand that the Ford Government repeal Bill 124. Make your voice heard!
Nurses and health-care professionals deserve fairness and respect now!
What is a Phone Zap?
You will need access to a telephone and a computer to participate. You will be given scripts to call and email MPPs to demand that the Ford government repeal Bill 124 now! Training will be provided in the first thirty minutes and we will take action together for the next hour. You will be sent an email reminder about the zap.
